We have exciting news! The groundbreaking event for our project, the “Hotchkiss Green” at the Hotchkiss Field Community Center will be on Wednesday August 7, at 5:30 pm. More details are coming but the groundbreaking will include speakers from the City of Richmond, City of Richmond Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities, and others, and Ruby Scoops ice-cream following the groundbreaking. Please spread the word, and we hope to see you there! 💚🌳🍦

We are excited to announce that construction will begin late this summer on the Hotchkiss Green at the Hotchkiss Field Community Center. Plans are underway for a community-wide groundbreaking on August 7th — stay tuned for more details. As we approach this project milestone, we want to extend an extra thanks to the generous sponsors who have helped us make the renovation of this well-loved community space in Richmond's northside a reality. Drawing on community input, Hotchkiss Green will be a resilient greenspace filled with walking trails, seating areas, shade trees, and pollinator gardens. Congratulations to Anita Hall for surpassing our 100+ volunteer hours milestone this fiscal year. Anita has been volunteering with Capital Trees since October 2021, and has contributed 156 hours since then! Anita is an avid hiker and world traveler, and we’re so grateful that she always makes her way back to the Low Line to volunteer. She’s meticulous in her weed pulling, and was instrumental in helping us decrease the weed bank at the Low Line and Great Shiplock Park. Thanks for all you do Anita!

Last month, we hosted our Annual Meeting to celebrate the accomplishments and progress we made during the 2023 - 2024 fiscal year. Thank you to all of the community partners, volunteers, and supporters who helped us build a greener and more livable Richmond this year. Your generous and ongoing support helped us raise funds to construct Hotchkiss Green and accomplish the following:

💚Planting 90 trees in the Richmond region
💚Hosting 4 community workdays
💚Welcoming 13 private workdays with businesses and organizations
💚Managing 39 weekly maintenance days
💚Refurbishing the median gardens at Great Shiplock Park
💚Reducing invasive species along the bank of the Kanawha Canal
💚Connecting with the community through events and outreach

We were excited to honor this year’s Volunteer of the Year at our Annual Meeting in June. Mary Bennett first volunteered with us in April 2022 and has since invested a whopping 159.25 hours helping to care for our urban green spaces. She is a true light in the gardens — welcoming everyone who comes out to volunteer, jumping into each task with gusto and a smile, and she’s quick to lend a hand wherever she can. Last fiscal year alone, she’s put in 73 hours at the Low Line — join us in celebrating Mary and thanking her for all that’s she’s done to help make Richmond a greener, more welcoming place. 👏💚

Residents in neighborhoods without adequate shade are at risk of heat related health emergencies including dehydration, heat stroke, and even death. Over the last fiscal year, we’ve helped plant 90 trees in the Richmond region, in addition to caring for our already established urban green spaces to help cool temperatures now and in the future for Richmonders. The heat wave we’re experiencing in Richmond this week emphasizes why urban green spaces are a vital resource for our communities. Shaded neighborhoods are more protected from extreme summer heat, experiencing temperatures several degrees cooler than nearby urban neighborhoods without trees and landscaping. Planting trees, shrubs, tall grasses, and other plants in place of turf grass is an investment in the health of our neighborhoods now, and in the future as extreme temperatures continue to impact our area. We had a blast at our bioblitz last week, celebrating #NationalPollinatorWeek with other insect enthusiasts! Thank you to all of the community members who came out to join in, documenting 19 species along the Low Line Gardens in the 2 hour observation window. A special shout out to @rvaparksandrec for sharing the latest information about @beecity_rva , Board Member Hollee Freeman for sharing her honey bee knowledge, and our long-term volunteer Jerry who manages the mason bee hive at Great Shiplock Park for educating about those lesser-known but equally important pollinators.

It's the first day of summer and we've already felt some scorching temperatures here in #RVA. In our urban landcapes, we opt for drought tolerant plants whenever possible because we're not able to water regularly like we might in home gardens. One of our favorite resilient plantings? Echinacea purpurea ‘Magnus." It's a hardy perennial that thrives in harsh urban conditions and isn’t discouraged by poor soil, extreme heat, or drought. 🙌👏
