Capital Trees’ mission is Cultivating Vibrant Public Greenspaces, which encompasses both the creation and renovation of these spaces, as well as their long-term, sustainable management – a project in itself. We are committed to maintaining our greenspaces– increasing their value in the community and for the environment over the long term and for the next generation. Over the years, with our care, the places we create become more beautiful and better for the environment through our community-volunteer driven stewardship practices.
Sustainability is the practice of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It involves using resources wisely, minimizing waste and pollution, and promoting renewable energy source (RVA Green 2050). Sustainability efforts are vital for preserving natural resources, like the James River, and ensuring clean air and water for residents.

Our management practices:
- Improve ecosystems
- Adapt to climate change
- Increase biodiversity
- Sustainably manage pests and invasives
- Use and lose less water
- Improve soil quality
- Reduce waste
- Support wildlife
We invite neighbors and community members to participate in the project of sustaining our greenspaces through weekly, private, and community workdays. By volunteering with Capital Trees, community members learn valuable practices for both planting and caring for greenspaces that can be applied to their personal spaces and other public greenspaces.
