November 2024
Capital Trees, Keep Va Beautiful, community volunteers, and Co-Star returned to the site in November 2024 to assist DPR with park improvements including installing benches, planting a pollinator garden among the trees, and replanting trees that did not survive (only 5). Young Men’s Service League also volunteered to help with improvements. Through the support of Co-Star, the park trail will also be resurfaced.
What’s next? All of the first 50 trees planted need stakes/cages removed, the mulch ring weeded, expanded, and the tree diaper reinstalled. As the pollinator garden establishes, periodic weeding will be needed. Capital Trees will be coordinating with parks to sponsor private workdays on site. May 2023
Capital Trees, Keep Va Beautiful, and Co-Star returned to the site in May 2024 to assist DPR with ongoing maintenance of the planted trees including removing the stakes and cages to weed around the trees and add more mulch.
How it started, 2023
In 2023 Keep Va Beautiful approached Capital Trees about partnering on a tree planting project in Richmond with Co-Star. Working with the City of Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities (DPR) staff, Canoe Run Park was identified as a good site location to partner for ongoing improvements.
The first round of improvements took place in late October 2023 where Co-Star and community volunteers planted 50 trees around the walking track and between the track and the playground. The project included planting trees, adding tree diapers, creating mulch rings around the trees, and then staking/caging the trees to protect them as they develop.
