In 2023 Capital Trees launched an Education and Engagement Committee to continue to develop education opportunities and to build our engagement in communities with which we partner. Capital Trees connects with our neighbors to build partnerships throughout the year by attending neighborhood meetings, teaching in classrooms, tabling at community events, attending public meetings, hosting community volunteer opportunities, and participating in community initiatives (including Bee City and East End Green Infrastructure) Your gift of $500 can help to support our ongoing commitment to community engagement. 12 Days of Giving: Day 9 — $300 donation

Capital Trees is committed to building a greener and more vibrant Richmond by increasing tree canopy and developing transformative public green spaces. Trees are the cornerstone to this effort. 🌳 We partnered with public, private, and government groups to plant 90 trees in the Richmond region last year. Our goal is to plant over 100 trees throughout Richmond next year; a gift of $300 can help support the planting of one new tree and a recurring monthly gift of $300 would help support our ambitious tree planting goal. One of the essential components for plants and trees to thrive? Water!💧 While some of our gardens have irrigation, and we plant drought tolerant plants when possible, irrigation is not available in the late fall through early spring when new plants are getting established. Your gift of $200 can help support hand watering when needed, or the installation of 2 tree diapers (pictured here). Ensuring that our plants and trees have adequate water is a year-round endeavor and a great opportunity to set up a recurring gift, for this recurring maintenance need. In 2023 Capital Trees launched an Education and Engagement Committee to continue to develop meaningful education programs focused on public landscape development and care, and to build our engagement in communities with which we partner. Help us spread the word about the necessity of trees, green spaces, and sustainable stewardship of public landscapes. We love to share about our work through speaking engagements, hands-on teaching, and onsite tours. Thank you to our volunteers! This year, we've led community, private, and weekly workdays totaling over 1600 hours of volunteer service. Our volunteers braved all sorts of weather to plant trees, remove weeds, prune perennials, transplant plants, and otherwise care for our urban green spaces. Mulch is an integral part of our approach to sustainable management. Not only do we leave the leaves in the gardens, but also we apply layers of mulch seasonally to help retain water, improve soil quality, and suppress weeds. 12 Days of Giving: Day 4 — $50 donation

Thanks to the consistent contribution of time from our volunteers, we manage our gardens with eco-friendly practices. That includes hand pulling unwanted plants and weeds rather than using harsh herbicides. Pulling weeds before they go to seed requires many volunteer hours, but is an essential part of reducing the seed bank in the gardens. (You can learn more about this approach from this blog post: capitaltrees.org/friend-or-foe/) A $50 donation to Capital Trees can help purchase TEN 5-gallon plastic buckets that volunteers fill with hand-pulled weeds to carry to our compost areas. We leave fallen leaves in our green spaces over the winter to provide habitat for insects. Sometimes though, leaves need to be raked off the trail and into garden beds, or we need to rake up pulled weeds to remove them altogether. Your gift of $15 can help us purchase gardening equipment like rakes to properly equip our volunteers. The days are getting shorter, and winter is on the way. We have good news though... Our gardens are designed to provide beauty and interest every season of the year, including late fall and winter! We're always partial to the red berries of Winterberry, Ilex verticillata ’Sparkleberry', which provide color along the Low Line during the winter.

Last month we hosted a tree planting at Eastern Henrico Recreation Center. Volunteers from Blue Sky Fund’s Outdoor Leadership Institute and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority joined us for a productive Saturday morning, and we planted 20 trees! Thank you to our friends at Virginia Department of Forestry and Henrico County Recreation & Parks for their help in managing the many volunteers who joined in, and for everyone who took time out of their weekend to help plant trees — it matters!
