I cringe when I think of the many times I have promoted the value of a plant, star magnolia comes to mind, stating that “its leaves in August are pristine, not a bite taken out of them. We had a great turn out at Canoe Run Park this wee

We had a great turn out at Canoe Run Park this weekend! A pollinator garden was planted, benches were installed, and trees were planted, caged, and mulched. With many hands at work, we accomplished a ton of important work in just a few hours. Thank you so much to everyone who showed up to volunteer! The park (and all of us!) will benefit for years to come.

Each year, local organizations and businesses jump

Each year, local organizations and businesses jump in to assist with the maintenance work necessary to keep our urban green spaces thriving and welcoming to all. In 2024, we hosted 17 private workdays at Great Shiplock Park, the Low Line Gardens, and the Low Line Green. This thankful season, we’re sending an extra thank you to each of the groups that pitched in to volunteer this year, whether it was your first time or if it’s an annual tradition. Collectively you all contributed hundreds of hours in the gardens, weeding, pruning, planting and transplanting — helping make #RVA a greener place for all of us. Thank you!

This time of year we always spend some time reflec

This time of year we always spend some time reflecting and expressing our gratitude. Join us in thanking each and every volunteer who has contributed their time to making Richmond a greener, more liveable place for all of us this year. From community work days along the Low Line, to tree planting days at community parks, to garden clean ups at the Boys & Girls Club — members of our community step up time and again. Under the guidance of our horticulture expert, our core group of weekly maintenance volunteers have become experts in their own right, developing their knowledge base and leadership qualities which will benefit our community for years to come. This group braves challenging weather of all sorts, and remains committed to caring for the living, breathing spaces that are our urban gardens — amassing over 600 volunteer hours over the course of this year. Thank you for your unwavering and ongoing support, we truly couldn’t do it without you.

We needed help managing weeds there, which isn’t a glamorous job, but it’s necessary to ensure the health and beauty of our urban green spaces. They tackled the weeds, and made a huge dent. In honor of our upcoming 15th anniversary as an organization, we're hosting a celebration on the first day of spring — the evening of Thursday, March 20, 2025 at Main Street Station. We encourage you to save the date! Stay tuned for additional details, we'll have more to share in the new year. 🎉

Pierce Arrow Properties volunteered with us last f

Pierce Arrow Properties volunteered with us last fall, and they returned a couple of weeks ago for another day in the gardens. We were thrilled to have them back! They worked together in Great Shiplock Park to prepare the beds for daffodil bulbs to be planted. They also began prepping one of the beds along the Low Line Gardens for fall planting as well. As the weather cools, we're not closing up shop for winter. In fact, much of what prepares the gardens for a successful spring starts now. Thanks so much to this group for another successful workday!

It's official! Construction has started on our lat

It's official! Construction has started on our latest large scale project at Hotchkiss Field Community Center — "Hotchkiss Green." If you haven't heard, we're transforming just under 2 acres of turf that surrounds the center into a thriving green space, complete with shade trees, pollinator gardens, walking trails, and more. From community engagement, to fundraising and permitting, we've been hard at work behind the scenes to get to this point. We'll be sharing updates during the construction process to keep you posted, stay tuned for updates!
