Connecting the 2026 CVNLA Winter Symposium to our work at Capital Trees

Written by: Jesse Palma, Community Engagement Manager for Capital Trees

The Central Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association 2026 Winter Symposium focused on “Growing Wellness: Plants, People, and a Thriving Planet”, connecting public health to horticulture and landscaping, in a way that was uniquely specific to the Capital Trees mission. We heard many different perspectives on the ways landscapes can heal people and support communities, beyond just healthier environments and physical exercise. The presenters explored those psychological, emotional, and physical benefits from experiences around the world, truly emphasizing the power of greenspaces.

Hoichi and Michiko Kurisu of Kurisu LLC, shared their work and views on Japanese Gardens as Healing Spaces. Their theology on the foundation of Japanese healing gardens in public spaces highlighted the significant value these spaces offer. For example, their project at a correctional facility not only offered proven physical and mental health benefits for inmates, it also initiated an inmate workforce with camaraderie and a shared mission. Listening to the duo describe the project’s success and positive influence in such a sensitive environment was not only impressive but inspiring. It’s a reminder that when Capital Trees brings people together through volunteering, the ripple effects reach much farther than even we can truly know.

Several of the speakers shared views and strategies that could inspire Capital Trees work. Daria McKelvey of the Missouri Botanical Gardens described dynamic educational offerings for the public, while Leah Purdy of Resource Environmental Solutions discussed creating and maintaining pollinator friendly habitats and other ways to support beneficial insect populations. I left the CVNLA Symposium with a collection of ideas and inspiration for furthering Capital Trees educational offerings, including through our participation in the Bee City Richmond initiative.
