The Completion of the Low Line Green

May 29, 2020

The Low Line Green reclaims 1.5 acres east of the Floodwall and adjacent to the James River and Kanawha Canal. It’s an area rich in history and overlooked for decades. We are thrilled with its potential to serve as a trail head and outdoor classroom. The Green further demonstrates the potential for public landscapes to attract economic development, promote outdoor activity, improve stormwater quality, increase biodiversity, and build community.

This Wednesday, and nearly every Wednesday, our maintenance volunteers are at Great Shiplock Park and the Low Line, handling the recurring weekly tasks that an urban garden needs to flourish. During #NationalVolunteerWeek, we want to acknowledge that their commitment is incredibly valued, and we've loved seeing the growth our recurrent volunteers have shown. Their knowledge base grows with each week, many of our volunteers are becoming leaders in their own right, and all of them go above and beyond to care for the collective asset that is our urban greenspaces. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

It's #NationalVolunteerWeek, and the perfect time to give a shoutout to @crewrichmond who returned this spring for another productive workday in the gardens. We strive to give volunteer groups hands-on work so that when they wrap up their volunteer hours they feel a sense of satisfaction at a job well done, and we love when groups keep coming back for more. #EarthDay is the perfect day to celebrate that not only did we raise the full amount to reach our Leadership Match, but we exceeded it! Together, your generosity amounted to $23,975 raised during our one month giving window. And with the match from our Board of Trustees and Advisory Council for the first $10k raised, that's a total of $33,975 raised over the last month! THANK YOU!

Happy #EarthDay to all! From our perspective, every day is Earth Day and that's why we strive to create environmentally conscious urban greenspaces. Our focus on the sustainable management of gardens ensures that the spaces provide nectar and pollen for pollinators, food for birds, and shelter for wildlife – all while avoiding the use of harmful herbicides and pesticides. April is "Kids in the Garden" Month and with this

April is "Kids in the Garden" Month and with this week's warm weather, it's the perfect time to take your kids on a trip to the Low Line. We created a fun printable for a Low Line themed game of "I spy" to help your little ones engage with the gardens. Just print as many copies as you need, grab a handful of crayons, and head down to the gardens. And once your sheet is colored in, we'd love to see a photo of it!
