In fact, we encourage it and you’ll see us using this practice in our public landscapes. Allowing organic materials to decompose in place allows them to break down and return nutrients back to the soil, acting as a free mulch, and saving you tons of time trying to keep things pristine. As you tackle your winter maintenance and tool cleaning, it's also a good time to check your gardens or yards for lurking invasive species. Check out this information from the Invasive Plant Task Force about how you can help stop the spread of Ficaria verna (Fig buttercup)!

Do you have invasive fig buttercup (Ficaria verna) in your yard? This winter guest is spring's worst invasive plant, obliterating our indigenous wildflowers at it takes over streamside and wetland areas in the James River Park System.  Help us protect park habitat by learning how to correctly identify and control fig buttercup at home.
