We'll be in the gardens from 9 am - 3 pm participating in citizen science by documenting pollinators as they enjoy the garden blooms. We hope to see you there! @beecityrichmondva @xercessociety
@primisbank returned to the gardens to volunteer l @primisbank returned to the gardens to volunteer last month, and this year they met us at our latest project — the Hotchkiss Green. The team refreshed the mulch rings around the newly planted trees and shrubs to help the beds retain moisture in the coming hot weather. They also helped us fight back (by hand-pulling!) the wiregrass trying to invade some of the garden beds. The group brought a great energy to their workday, and we appreciate all the ways that Primis helps to support our work cultivating vibrant public greenspaces.

We welcomed @gracre_rva back to the Low Line for a We welcomed @gracre_rva back to the Low Line for a workday, and it was a really productive morning! The crew worked together to plant several shrubs, transplant iris, clean up and weed garden beds, plant Phlox divaricata, and remove an underperforming type of grass in the Great Shiplock rain garden to replace it with Muhlenbergia capillaris 'White Cloud.’ Thank you so much to this group for donating their time and elbow grease to the gardens, it made an impact!

Much of our work is aimed at creating a greener, h Much of our work is aimed at creating a greener, healthier city for the next generation. And it's especially fulfilling when the next generation gets involved in this work too! We were thrilled to host students from Good Shepherd Episcopal's Eco Club at the Low Line, where they helped us weed the garden beds and plant phlox. We offered them a tour of the Low Line Gardens, and they were also able to enjoy a tour of the James River Association's James A. We've talked a little bit about our work helping n We've talked a little bit about our work helping neighborhood associations reclaim and renew pocket parks, and our work at James S. Christian, Jr., Park is one of those examples. We recently participated in a community workday there, and want to thank all the volunteers who joined us! Together, we planted three trees and more than 100 perennial plants to help the small space become a more fitting setting for the memorial. We're eager to help turn this green space in the heart of the neighborhood into a spot where residents want to spend time and connect with each other.

We had a lot to accomplish at Canoe Run Park this We had a lot to accomplish at Canoe Run Park this spring, and luckily the group from @eaton_corp were up for the challenge. The large group joined us to plant a replacement tree, and added mulch and tree diapers to help make sure all the trees stay watered in the upcoming summer heat. In addition, they planted 150 perennial plants in the pollinator garden! Thanks to their contributions, this space is poised to become even more welcoming to both people and pollinators.
Shoutout to the Jefferies team for volunteering wi Shoutout to the Jefferies team for volunteering with us at Canoe Run Park to do some tree maintenance. They helped to replace a couple of trees, adjust the tree diapers (our irrigation method of choice), and expand mulch rings to help retain moisture and protect the trees from competition with weeds. The work we do to help young trees get established in the years immediately after planting helps to ensure they reach their full potential in the years to come, allowing them to provide beauty, shade, and habitats for wildlife. Thanks again to the folks from @jefferies, we appreciate you being willing to get your hands in the dirt for a greener future.
Sending our thanks to the group from @markelinsura Sending our thanks to the group from @markelinsurance with @rtrva that volunteered with us at Hotchkiss Green to plant a whopping 450 perennial plugs — which start as small plants and once established will return to the space year after year. Adding hundreds of plugs to garden beds goes a lot quicker with many hands at work. 💪 Look for their additions when you stop by Hotchkiss Green for a stroll! We appreciate you all joining us and "striving for better together."

The trees and shrubs we planted in the fall are leafing out, and our volunteers have been hard at work adding hundreds of perennial plants in the past few weeks. The project isn't finished just yet, but it's absolutely open for visitors who would like to walk the winding paths. We hope you stop by and enjoy the new green space soon! There’s more to increasing our tree canopy than There’s more to increasing our tree canopy than just planting trees. Ongoing maintenance, especially in the first few years after planting, is essential to ensure that the trees get established for long term health. Luckily for us, we had a large enthusiastic group on board for our tree care day at Canoe Run Park last month. We needed to remove weeds and enlarge the mulch rings beneath each tree. The mulch helps retain moisture and discourage weeds which reduces competition for nutrients. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped us tackle this work, including some of the players from VCU’s lacrosse team.
