Join Us May 30 For Volunteer Work Day At The Low Line

It’s a clean-up. And a workout. It’s always an uplifting experience, especially when you bring along a friend. It’s our next Volunteer Work Day, and it’s on May 30 from 1 to 3 p.m.

That’s right, we’re getting ready to prep, prune and preen our Virginia Treasure just in time for packs of Capital Trail bikers and hikers, gaggles of families pushing strollers and dragging wagons, and nature lovers seeking to explore Great Shiplock Park.

We hosted a tree planting day at Armour House & Ga

We hosted a tree planting day at Armour House & Gardens at Meadowview Park earlier this month. Staff from Henrico County Parks and the Virginia Department of Forestry were on site to assist, demonstrate proper tree planting techniques, and ensure the event went smoothly. Thanks to the help of many volunteers, we got 18 trees planted in just a couple of hours. A special thanks to the groups of volunteers from Henrico Sports and Events Center, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, as well as all the individuals who joined in to assist!

Capital Trees is committed to engaging with communities on small and large greening projects and best practices for long term care of greenspace. We continue to engage neighbors and friends on the Hotchkiss Green project with updates, events, and tree giveaways. We’ve also broadened our community impact by supporting neighborhood associations on small-scale greening initiatives. We were honored to be invited to offer our expertise and guidance on revitalization of neighborhood pocket parks this year, and want to send our thanks to these neighborhood associations for bringing us on board to help!

Thank you to everyone who has generously lended their support to our latest undertaking: the Hotchkiss Green. After many months of fundraising, planning, selecting partners, and securing permitting — construction is underway! The project draws upon community input, and will transform just under 2 acres of turf at the Hotchkiss Field Community Center in Richmond’s northside. Slated to be completed in 2025, Hotchkiss Green will be a resilient green space that includes walking trails, seating areas, shade trees, pollinator gardens and more. THANK YOU to all of the sponsors who have helped fund this transformation. We can’t wait for everyone to see it come to life.

We’re all in for a treat in the spring thanks to

We’re all in for a treat in the spring thanks to the Virginia Daffodil Society’s two-year effort to install 1200 historic daffodil bulbs at Great Shiplock Park. VDS planted several different historic cultivars (Ornatus, Emperor, Empress, Sir Watkins, and Conspicuus) all of which were registered between 1850-1880 when the lock system was active in Richmond. The spring blooming daffodils will honor the area’s past, and will bloom for many years in the future. Thank you to all of the volunteers who spent time planting daffodils over the past two years, and to those who donated the bulbs themselves.

In fact, leaving the leaves and remnants of perennials, stalks, and other foliage in place allows insects to overwinter and can provide seeds for birds and wildlife. You'll notice we take this approach in our urban gardens. It's an easy way to shorten your to-do list and support our environment at the same time. 🌍🌱

We had a great turn out at Canoe Run Park this wee

We had a great turn out at Canoe Run Park this weekend! A pollinator garden was planted, benches were installed, and trees were planted, caged, and mulched. With many hands at work, we accomplished a ton of important work in just a few hours. Thank you so much to everyone who showed up to volunteer! The park (and all of us!) will benefit for years to come.

Each year, local organizations and businesses jump in to assist with the maintenance work necessary to keep our urban green spaces thriving and welcoming to all. In 2024, we hosted 17 private workdays at Great Shiplock Park, the Low Line Gardens, and the Low Line Green. This thankful season, we’re sending an extra thank you to each of the groups that pitched in to volunteer this year, whether it was your first time or if it’s an annual tradition. Collectively you all contributed hundreds of hours in the gardens, weeding, pruning, planting and transplanting — helping make #RVA a greener place for all of us. Thank you!
