Sending a shoutout to the RVA Rotary Club for volu Sending a shoutout to the RVA Rotary Club for volunteering with us at the Hotchkiss Green! This group contributed their time to help us reclaim the newly planted food forest at the Hotchkiss Green from invading weeds – thank you! When volunteers help us sustainably manage our public greenspaces by hand-pulling weeds, we can avoid the use of harsh herbicides, making our gardens safer for visitors large and small. 🐝🐦🚶‍♂️

In our early planning phases for the Hotchkiss Gre In our early planning phases for the Hotchkiss Green project, we worked closely with residents in nearby neighborhoods to get their feedback on what they'd like to see included in the space. One of the requests? Edible plants and trees. We designed the new greenspace accordingly. Visitors will find pawpaw, fig, blueberries, strawberries, jujube, jostaberry, persimmon, and bush cherry which will all get more established in the coming years. We'll also be adding elderberry in the fall!

@kimleyhorn volunteered with us in the fall and jo @kimleyhorn volunteered with us in the fall and joined us again last month to get their hands back in the dirt. They spent most of their time helping us clean up the rain garden at Great Shiplock Park. Maintenance work is not always glamorous, but it’s absolutely essential to the health of urban greenspaces. Thanks to these hardworking volunteers for weeding, pulling invasive plants, trimming, deadheading, and getting rid of the non-native and invasive Tree of Heaven.
