Sending our thanks to the group from @markelinsura Sending our thanks to the group from @markelinsurance with @rtrva that volunteered with us at Hotchkiss Green to plant a whopping 450 perennial plugs — which start as small plants and once established will return to the space year after year. Adding hundreds of plugs to garden beds goes a lot quicker with many hands at work. 💪 Look for their additions when you stop by Hotchkiss Green for a stroll! We appreciate you all joining us and "striving for better together."
Our current project, Hotchkiss Green, has really c Our current project, Hotchkiss Green, has really come to life thanks to the warm spring weather. The trees and shrubs we planted in the fall are leafing out, and our volunteers have been hard at work adding hundreds of perennial plants in the past few weeks. The project isn't finished just yet, but it's absolutely open for visitors who would like to walk the winding paths. We hope you stop by and enjoy the new green space soon! You can find it at Hotchkiss Field Community Center in Richmond's Northside.
There’s more to increasing our tree canopy than There’s more to increasing our tree canopy than just planting trees. Ongoing maintenance, especially in the first few years after planting, is essential to ensure that the trees get established for long term health. Luckily for us, we had a large enthusiastic group on board for our tree care day at Canoe Run Park last month. We needed to remove weeds and enlarge the mulch rings beneath each tree. The mulch helps retain moisture and discourage weeds which reduces competition for nutrients. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped us tackle this work, including some of the players from VCU’s lacrosse team. Our work at Canoe Run Park is made possible thanks to our sponsor, Co-Star, and our partnership with Keep Virginia Beautiful and RVA Parks and Rec.

Last month we hosted an Earth Day Celebration at H Last month we hosted an Earth Day Celebration at Hotchkiss Field Community Center to showcase the in-progress Hotchkiss Green project that is well underway. We're so grateful to the many community organizations who joined us at the event to teach about sustainability, the environment, and provide hands-on activities to get people of all ages engaged. We were thrilled with the turn out of community members who were willing to step off of the pavement, onto the grass, and into a fresh way of thinking.

As a part of our ongoing garden maintenance, we ne As a part of our ongoing garden maintenance, we needed to replace some of the non-thriving inkberry shrubs (Ilex glabra) with winterberry (Ilex verticillata) and yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) in the Low Line Gardens. Thanks to the volunteers from Fulton Bank, including Board Treasurer Brian Kinnear, we were able to make quick work of the task. There’s nothing quite like working side by side with others and then standing back and admiring the difference that you all made together. Our workdays are a great way for teams to bond with each other and connect with nature at the same time. @fulton.bank
We were busy during the month of April for Earth D We were busy during the month of April for Earth Day and Earth Week activities! We tabled at events at the Science Museum of Virginia, Henrico County, and Riverfront Plaza. These events allowed us to connect with community members about the importance of urban greenspaces, invite folks to get involved, and share more about the transformative work we’re doing. Because when people become aware of how important greenspaces are to humanity and the planet, they're inspired to help carry our mission further.

Earlier this spring, the Tuckahoe Garden Club volu Earlier this spring, the Tuckahoe Garden Club volunteered with us along the Low Line and at Hotchkiss Green to add several native trees to the gardens as part of their Centennial Tree Project. The mix of hop hornbeam, black gum, white redbuds, and fringe trees will add shade to the greenspaces for years to come. Tuckahoe Garden Club is one of our original founding clubs, and we’re thankful that they’re still so involved with helping us enhance the health and beauty of our public greenspaces. @tuckahoegardenclub
