Richmond Tree Week kicks off tomorrow, and with 40 events spread out over 10 days — there's something for everyone! Check out Reforest Richmond's full list of events to see how to volunteer, snag a free tree, join in on a tour, and learn more about trees.

🌳You can catch up with Capital Trees on Wednesday 10/16. In the morning, we're hosting a volunteer workday, tours of the Low Line featuring plant identification, and a tree giveaway. That afternoon, we'll hop over to Hotchkiss Community Center from 4pm - 6pm for another tree giveaway, and we're offering tours of our current project site: The Hotchkiss Green.

With nearly 15 years of experience creating urban green spaces in Richmond, we've learned a thing or two worth sharing. Church Hill Association invited Capital Trees to design the planting plan for enhancing/renovating the gardens at Libby Hill Park. This past weekend, members of the City Parks and Recreation Department and neighborhood volunteers worked to prepare the garden beds, plant shrubs, and mulch them to suppress weeds. @chaofrva @rvaparksandrec

We had a great time hosting a garden tour along the Low Line for the Three Chopt Garden Club — one of the four founding garden clubs that helped get Capital Trees off the ground nearly 15 years ago! With many new members in recent years, we were grateful for the opportunity to bring the group up to speed on the latest project updates, while venturing up and down the Low Line Gardens. We're excited to introduce the newest addition to

We're excited to introduce the newest addition to our team, Jesse Palma, our new Community Engagement Manager! Jesse’s background is in environmental health research which primarily focuses on coastal geography and the synergy of ecology and socioeconomics within the Southeastern United States. She studied Environmental Geography, Civil Engineering, and Geographic Information Systems at Old Dominion University and is still contributing work to their Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience. Palma spent her childhood playing in the swamps and marshlands of Virginia’s Tidewater region, affording her a deep understanding of the expansive and intrinsic value of conservation and green infrastructure. She is now dedicated to advancing knowledge on coastal development, green infrastructure planning, and public health. We are thrilled to have her on board, and can't wait for everyone to meet and engage with her in the coming months. You can read her full bio from the staff page on our website, and in the meantime, please leave her a warm welcome in the comments!

Another successful workday is in the books! The team from @graycoprops collectively contributed 30 hours along the Low Line Gardens weeding, digging, dividing, and deadheading plants to ready them for the coming fall and winter. Urban gardens need regular maintenance throughout the year to keep them healthy and looking beautiful and welcoming to visitors, and workdays with groups and businesses really add up and make an impact. Thank you GrayCo team, we hope you come back soon!

Thank you so much to the team from Boston Scientific for volunteering with us a couple of weeks ago while they were in town! What a fun crew! Every volunteering group that visits this time of year is imperative to keeping weeds in the gardens at bay — they are trying their best to flourish in the humidity and heat. We love hosting work groups, school groups, friend groups and all sorts of enthusiastic volunteers for work days.
