Announcing the New Members of Our Board of Trustees

Capital Trees is excited to announce the appointment of five new board members to the Board of Trustees. In addition, Capital Trees welcomes a new slate of officers. The new leadership is effective as of July 1, 2019.

Mayor Levar Stoney Visited the Low Line for Earth Day!

We know that locals love the work that we’ve done on the Low Line along Virginia Capital Trail. That’s why many of the people who visit the Low Line do so multiple times per week, and season after season. 

We recently got the opportunity to show Mayor Levar Stoney some of our contributions to the Richmond community, and we jumped at the chance!

New Research Finds Connection between Access to Nature and Mental Health

Having access to a park or green space usually encourages physical activity. And more morning jogs or lunch-break walks can help promote physical wellness.

But being outside in nature brings more to the table than just physical fitness. New research has found that access to green space during childhood can have a positive impact on mental health as an adult.

The numbers are staggering. The research concludes that “children surrounded by low amounts of green space in childhood have up to a 55% higher risk of developing a mental disorder – even after adjusting for other known risk factors such as socio-economic status,

The 17th Street Market Features Silva Cells

Have you visited the newly renovated 17th Street Market? Located in the heart of Shockoe Bottom, the market has been a center of our community for over 275 years. As part of the refresh, 22 overcup, willow and Nuttall oaks were planted. As they grow, they will provide a shade canopy for the plaza’s busy public events.

In the recent past, cities and nature were treated as distinct entities. Cities were developed and roads were paved. In contrast, nature remained merely as an accent or as part of the outskirts of the cityscape.
